Court case status — common questions

How do I check my court case status online by name?

Choose "Party Name" in the search box above, pick the court type and state, then type the name exactly as it appears on the petition — partial names work, so "Sathya" will match "E. Sathyapriya". Add the filing year, which the eCourts party search requires. You will get every matching case with its current stage, the next hearing date and the judge. If several cases share a similar name, check the case number printed on your own notice to tell them apart.

What is a CNR number and where do I find it?

The CNR (Case Number Record) is a unique 16-character code given to every case filed in an eCourts-connected court in India — for example WBCS020034812025. The first four letters identify the state and the court establishment, and the remaining digits identify the case and its filing year. It is printed on court notices, summons, vakalatnama copies and any order sheet you have received, and your advocate can always read it off the file. Because one CNR maps to exactly one case, it is the fastest and most reliable way to search.

What does "case disposed" mean?

Disposed means the court has finished with the matter and passed its final order — the case is no longer pending before that court. It does not by itself tell you who won: a case can be disposed because it was decreed, dismissed, withdrawn, settled, compromised, or transferred to another forum. Read the final order to see which. If the wording is unclear, a senior advocate can read the order and tell you what it means and whether an appeal is still open to you — that consultation costs ₹99.

How often is the case status updated?

Case data is refreshed from the public eCourts services every day. Courts themselves usually upload the day’s proceedings and the next hearing date within 24 to 48 hours of the hearing, and orders can take a little longer to be scanned and published. So if your hearing was this morning, the new date may appear tomorrow rather than immediately. If you track the case, we send a WhatsApp alert the moment a new date or order shows up, so you do not have to keep checking.

Why can I not find my case?

The usual reasons are: the name is spelled differently in the court record than you expect (try a shorter, partial name); the wrong court type or state is selected; the filing year is wrong; or the case is very newly filed and has not yet been published to eCourts. Cases from courts not connected to eCourts — some tribunals and a few specialised forums — will not appear at all. Searching by CNR avoids nearly all of these problems, so use it whenever you have it.

Is this the official eCourts website?

No. Libra Case Tracker is not affiliated with the eCommittee, Supreme Court of India, or with services.ecourts.gov.in. We present the same public case data from eCourts services in a simpler, easier-to-read format, and add hearing alerts and access to lawyers on top of it. For certified copies and any official use, always go to the court or the official eCourts portal.

Is it free to search a court case here?

Yes. Searching and viewing any case — its parties, stage, hearing history and next date — is completely free and needs no account or login. You only pay if you choose to have the case tracked for you at ₹99 per month per case, which adds WhatsApp alerts before every hearing and when new orders are uploaded, or if you book a ₹99 consultation with a senior advocate.
