About Supreme Court of India
The Supreme Court of India is the apex court of the country. It was inaugurated on 26 January 1950, the day the Constitution came into force, and sits at Tilak Marg, New Delhi. It hears appeals from every High Court, writ petitions for the enforcement of fundamental rights under Article 32, original disputes between the Union and the States, and references from the President.
Most matters reach the Court as Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) under Article 136 — civil or criminal — and, once leave is granted, are registered as Civil or Criminal Appeals. Transfer petitions, review petitions and curative petitions have their own numbering.
Case numbers and CNR in Supreme Court of India
A Supreme Court filing first receives a Diary Number (for example Diary No. 12345/2025) and then, on registration, a case number in the form of the case type, a serial number and the year — SLP(C) No. 4567/2025 or W.P.(C) No. 89/2024. The Court runs its own case-information system rather than the district-court eCourts network, so search here by case type, number and year, or by party name.

Can I search a Supreme Court case by CNR number?
The Supreme Court is not part of the eCourts CNR system used by High Courts and district courts, so Supreme Court matters do not carry a 16-character CNR. Search by case type, number and year — for example SLP(C) 4567/2025 — or by the name of a party.
What is the difference between a Diary Number and a case number in the Supreme Court?
The Diary Number is assigned the moment a petition is filed at the Registry, before any defects are cured. The case number (such as SLP(C) No. 4567/2025) is assigned when the matter is registered and listed. Both identify the same matter, and the official cause list shows both.
How do I know when my Supreme Court matter is listed?
