About Madras High Court
The Madras High Court is one of the three chartered High Courts established under the Indian High Courts Act, 1861, and began sitting in 1862. It occupies the Indo-Saracenic High Court buildings at Parry's Corner, Chennai, and has jurisdiction over Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Since July 2004 the Court has also sat at Madurai, whose bench hears matters from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and is listed separately here. The principal seat in Chennai retains an original side for civil suits within the city above the pecuniary limit of the City Civil Court, alongside appellate, writ and criminal work.
